Harry Probert-Lloyd, a young barrister forced home from London by encroaching blindness, has begun work as the coroner of Teifi Valley with the clerk John Davies as his assistant. His fears that life back in Wales will be dull soon prove unfounded as his old friend and rival - now known to be a killer - comes back to haunt him.
