Marc Jones introduces us to the road that takes you through the whole of Wales - the A470.  Buckle up and journey with us for an hour for his tips and adventures along the way.

To the young Marc, Jones growing up on 1970s Cardiff, North Wales seemed like another country. A school trip to Snowdonia aged 11 revealed ‘almost a science fiction landscape’ a million miles further away from the grey streets of his neighbourhood at home.  Four decades on, and having lived for many years outside Wales, Marc vowed to return to his homeland and see it with fresh eyes.

So he took the A470 – the road that takes you through the whole of Wales - from cosmopolitan Cardiff in the south to the historic Victorian resorts of the north. This route traverses the country from end to end, winding its way through post-industrial valleys, agricultural landscapes and stunning mountains – and it offers a chance to see Wales for what it is in the twenty-first century, in all its diversity.

In the company of Gwendoline, his trusty but ancient scooter, Marc follows the long unwinding road – some 180 miles of it - on a quest to discover what makes his homeland tick. Taking in the splendour, beauty and history of the communities he travels through, Marc explores what unites and divides the different regions of this varied nation, and how can they learn to understand each other better.

As he searches for the answer to one question that’s been troubling him - how Welsh am I?  - there’s another, more immediate concern: will Gwendoline even make it to the end of the road in one piece?
